When is it? The Barbarian Project is a 10 week summer internship at Mosaic in Los Angeles, California. SUMMER 2008: June 5th - August 11th
Who is it for? This leadership development experience is designed for women and men who want to become ministry leaders of the future. The Barbarian Project will challenge you to become a person of character and an entreprenuerial leader, and it will help you see humanity as God sees it. We strive to develop your leadership skills in many facets as well as challenge you to engage in a unique character transformation process. The Barbarian Project is an international-based program for both single and married individuals, and there is no age limit.
How many are accepted? This summer we will be selecting 12-15 interns to participate in the Barbarian Project. We go through applications, do phone interviews, read through references, and then make a prayerful decision about who to accept for the summer. Last year we had over 60 applicants, so get your application in as soon as possible to give yourself the best chance of getting in.
What will I do during this internship?
  • The internship will consist of weekly interactions centered around unleashing your creative spirit, becoming a catalytic leader, maximizing your potential, creating momentum in spiritual communities, and the core values of Mosaic. You’ll be challenged in specific areas including the meaning of discipleship, the value of self-awareness, healthy team-building, relational intelligence, character-transformation, and proactive leadership.
  • This process will involve working alongside some of Mosaic’s leadership team and staff in a specific area of ministry (for example: artisans, children’s, college, high school, women’s, etc.).
  • One of the most important aspects of this internship involves your interacting with other summer “Barbarians” as well as people in the Mosaic community. You will be mentored throughout the summer by Mosaic leaders in both formal and informal ways. You will also be involved in peer learning environments with other summer interns.
  • We will ask you to serve in various capacities throughout the summer, gaining valuable experience and training. The areas of ministry available are: children’s, jr. high, high school, college, women’s, men’s, creative arts (drama, painting, sculpting, etc.), film/video, IT and web design, tech support, set design/production, and a few others. We will discuss what you would be involved with when the internship begins.
  • A typical week in the internship will include a minimum involvement of 30 hours per week, which includes serving, working on teams, meeting with Mosaic leaders, building realtionships, attending weekly intern meetings, learning labs, question and answer sessions with Mosaic paid staff, and other developmental experiences. Each intern will serve in at least 2 areas of ministry (most of which you’ll be able to choose). Each intern will also be asked to serve on setup and tear down teams at our weekly Sunday gatherings, as well as serve at various events we have throughout the summer.
What about the finances? Each Barbarian must pay $2,000 before beginning the 10 week experience. There is an initial $200 non-refundable deposit due on May 1st preceding the summer internship. Make checks payable to Mosaic and you can mail it to the address below:

The remaining $1800 will be due the first day of beginning the summer internship on June 5th. This cost covers housing for the summer, 12 plus meals per week, internet access with somewhat limited computer access (bring laptop if you have one), office space to work and meet people, some additional food and supplies, a parking permit, and a few other miscellaneous things.

Each intern will also be financially responsible for the rest of their meals, gas money, and any other personal expenses they might incur, including entertainment, eating out, car insurance, etc. Interns in the past have told us you can live off approximately $150-$200 per week, but of course there are a lot of variables depending on how much of Los Angeles you want to experience.

We HIGHLY RECOMMEND having a car for the summer - it’s worth the drive if you can make it. Los Angeles does not have good public transportation, so having a car in LA will be extremely beneficial. If you are not able to bring a car, prepare for getting rides and chipping in for gas with other interns, and bring a bike as a second option.

Application Process: Please send the completed application (download) and three references via email or mail to Steve Saccone - Steve@mosaic.org

SHORT VIDEO: We want you to make a short video and post to youtube.com OR burn it on a DVD and mail with your application. The video needs to be between 1 and 2 minutes long. In this video, tell us why you want to do a summer internship at Mosaic and why you think we should select you. Upon receiving the application and video, we will get back to you via email to set up phone interviews. You can send us the link to your youtube video with your application or mail a DVD of that video to our offices.
